Our client is seeking a Caretaker to join their premises & facilities team. You will help provide a safe & well maintained learning space for pupils, support set up / clear down for school events and provide transport for school activities driving our minibuses. You will be conscientious & practical with a “can do” attitude, happy to be actively involved in school life supporting the Educational team.
You will be responsible for 2 sites and their security and you will work in conjunction with the security team. You will ensure the overall good order of the premises and grounds and carry out and record health & safety checks. You will also carry out routine material and equipment checks and porter school deliveries as required. You will help the school use energy and water efficiently and minimise waste and occasionally drive the minibus to transport pupils to support the educational team.
You will be a keyholder and check, lock and unlock the building as required. You will liaise with the alarm company and attend calls outs as required. You will ensure that all windows and doors are closed and that all school gates are closed when the building is not in use. You will liaise with the cleaning team regarding locking up during term time and ensure that all items of significant value are security marked.
You will ensure adequate maintenance and cleaning materials are ordered and attend to maintenance, decorating and improvement tasks and you will oversee contractor work for more substantial decorating and improvement work during the holidays.
You will check all lighting tubes and replace as required, check stock of consumables regularly and order and replace air fresheners for toilets as required. You will ensure central heating is working and check all internal clocks weekly.
Routine Equipment/Consumable Checks.
You will attend to small maintenance tasks and minor repairs and ascertain the need for external repairers and liaise with contractors as required. You will also assembly furniture when required.
You will also be responsible for setting up rooms for meetings, putting out and away chairs and supporting the catering staff when possible with tables and chairs for lunch.
You will support the Business Manager in ensuring the school meets Health and Safety requirements by carrying out checks and maintaining records and attend training meetings relating to Health & Safety.
You will carry out daily and weekly inspection of vehicles and set up termly checks with 3rd parties, also servicing & MOT when required. You will ensure vehicles are clean & fuel levels are replenished and provide practice sessions for staff volunteering to drive in preparation for their assessments.
The ideal candidate will have experience of carrying out specialist building maintenance work within the capacity of a normal handyperson. You will have the ability to perform physical tasks required by the post including lifting, carrying and pushing various equipment to undertake the duties of the post. You will have an understanding of the main Health & Safety Regulations including COSHH and risk assessment and how they apply in a school environment. You will have experience of keeping inspection records and be able to identify work priorities and manage own workload whilst ensuring that lower priority work is kept up to date.
You will hold a full UK driving licence and ideally a D1 or PCV and have experience of driving a mini bus or comparable vehicle. You will have an understanding of and commitment to child welfare and safety.
